DeLand commission to review city's insurance coverage - News

DELAND -- The City Commission will be asked Monday night to approve a contract with Brown & Brown Insurance Co. that would bring all of the insurance coverage for municipal government under one umbrella.

For most of the last decade, the Daytona Beach-based firm has supplied most of the coverage with the exception of workers' compensation insurance, which the city purchased through the Florida Municipal Insurance Trust.

To offset anticipated increases in premiums, the city issued a request for proposals in June. Brown & Brown was one of three firms that responded. It indicated that it could provide workers' compensation insurance for $103,721, which is $100,000 less than the $208,326 the city is currently paying FMIT for coverage.

The city will pay higher premiums this coming fiscal year for several other categories but the total bill of $613,691 is still less than what it would cost otherwise.

"The bottom line is that with insurance, we are saving a bundle of money," City Manager Michael Pleus said Friday.

Public Risk Management also submitted a proposal, according to Kieu Nguyen, a risk management specialist with the city.

"It was too high for us to consider. But the coverage was great if we could have afforded it," Nguyen said.

Besides insurance, city commissioners also will be asked to declare various equipment including several police cars surplus and authorize Pleus to dispose of it.

The items will be sent to an auction, he said, including the vehicles. "We tried selling on eBay for awhile. It bought more money," he said, but also headaches and additional cost for transportation.

Pleus said the old police cars typically sell for between $3,000 and $4,000 at auction.

Other agenda items include:

- A request from property owners Lucy and Derek Davis that the city vacate the right-of-way for portions of MacDonald Avenue and University Avenue that border the couple's residential property.

- A resolution levying a special assessment lien against property at 551 E. Voorhis Ave. The city paid a lawn service $156 to cut the grass after efforts to contact the owner failed.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday in commission chambers at City Hall, 120 S. Florida Ave.
